How I use AI
Readers deserve to know what they’re getting, so here’s exactly where AI fits into my work and where it doesn’t.
My books are mine. Every word of my novels, scripts and stories are written by me. AI does not write any of my work, and I don’t publish AI-generated text as my own work. The characters, the plots, the research rabbit holes and the late nights are all human.
All social media posts, captions and descriptions are written by me, a human.
Where I do use AI
Images for marketing.
Some of the images you see on my social media and in promotional material are created with AI image tools. My book covers are designed by me, VFX is also a major part of the process.
Behind the scenes.
As an independent author, I run every part of my publishing business myself. I use AI assistants the way I’d use a good colleague: to help plan social media schedules, organise notes, sense-check continuity across a long series, a human editor is always used following an edit via ProWritingAid and AI, nothing is changed without my permission, nothing is added from AI.
Audiobooks.
My audiobooks are narrated by human narrators, AI is used to help them for long form reading. This is something platforms do not yet allow us to separate out.
TV and Film trailers.
A lot of work related to TV and Film is now developed using concept trailers. Real actors, real voices, real people, AI overlay.
Frames are created using actors real faces, these actors are paid in full for that ONE project, AI is then used to create scenes, later approved by the associated actor. All actors sign a full contract understanding the terms. Some scenes are created fully using AI, no matter how much I tried, I cannot get a stag to run through a field of snow like that.
What I don’t do
I don’t use AI to imitate other authors or to reproduce their work. Historical detail in my books comes from research, archives and the people who know Nottingham’s past best, not from a chatbot’s best guess. Research details can be found in the books.
